One of my many activities is to volunteer co-chair the Healthy Lifestyles Work-group of the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria. The partnership is a collaboration of community based organizations, schools, local business, community leaders and concerned citizens joined together to promote and preserve a healthy Alexandria community.
I am happy to say that we have been picked as one of ten communities to partner with the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) for their 2009 Action Communities for Health, Innovation, and Environmental Change (ACHIEVE). With this partnership our work-group, which previously had no money whatsoever, has been awarded a grant of $40,000 to use toward policy and environmental change to address poor nutrition, physical inactivity and obesity.
I cannot tell you how excited I am that (1) we can finally start doing things instead of just talking about what we want to do if we had money (2) I get to go to the coach's training in Atlanta, GA for two days and (3) we are one step closer to helping create a healthier Alexandria.
